extraordinary littleについて

「チャーリーとチョコレート工場」

のＤＶＤを見たので、
原作
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Puffin Novels)

も、オーディオブック

も買ってしまったのだが、訳本は今までは見たことがなかった。

訳は新旧二つあるが、旧訳の方はすでに絶版になってしまっているらしい。新訳は
チョコレート工場の秘密 ロアルド・ダールコレクション 2

旧訳はこれ

新訳は 柳瀬 尚紀 氏が担当しているが、アマゾンの読者の批評欄を見るとかなり評価の分かれる訳らしい。「原作者の意図を組んで」登場人物の名前まで変えてしまった点と、旧訳への批判が評価を落としているらしい。私自身は旧訳は遙か昔小学生時代に読んだだけなので覚えていないし、新訳は見ていないが、後書きだけ見てみた。（すみません立ち読みです）

「チョコレート工場の秘密」の続編である「ガラスの大エレベーター」の方の後書きに旧訳を批判して、ウォンカさんが旧訳で小さい男（人だったかも）と訳されている部分は間違いだと述べてある。原作で彼が最初に出てきた時に述べれる、And what an extraordinary little man he was!という部分だ。

柳瀬氏いわくこのlittleは前に出てきた形容詞を強める働きをしているのであって、ちいさいという意味は無いという。

気になったのでググってみた。

I have here represented him as he stood for me, with his shield on his arm, with his quiver slung, and his lance of fourteen feet in length in his right hand. This extraordinary little man , whose figure was light, seemed to be all bone and muscle, and exhibited immense power, by the curve of the bones in his legs and his arms.

This child, to my memory, really lives in a setting of beauty and misery that no words can translate; there was a distinction all his own in every impulse he revealed; never was a small natural creature, to the uninitiated eye all frankness and freedom, a more ingenious, a more extraordinary little gentleman

これらの例を見る限り、小さい人や子供や小さいものについて使われているので、柳瀬氏のいう「小さいという意味は無い」というのは間違いな気がしてくる。ただ彼が上げている旧訳ではここは「なんて小さい人でしょう」となっているらしいので、extraordinaryの意味が出ていないのは確か。

小さいのを強調するのであれば、extraordinarily littleとなるはずだから、この場合はwonka さんはextraordinary であり、littleであったと考えるのがいいのかもしれない。

しかし、littleの使い方には確かに前に出てくる形容詞を強める働きがあるので、その辺をもう少し勉強してみたい。
