HousekeeperとCookの呼ばれ方
家事使用人の中で一番偉いのは家令stewardであるが（家老のほうが分かりやすいか？）、その下に来るのは男性使用人をまとめる執事butlerと女性使用人をまとめるhousekeeperである。housekeeperは家政婦と訳すこともあるが、どうもそうだと今の日本の家政婦像がどうも出てきてしまうので、女中頭の方がしっくり来るような気がする。
ところで、そのhousekeeperとかcookは未婚だろうが既婚だろうが，敬意を持ってMrsを付けて呼ばれるらしい。
ディケンズの曾孫のモニカ・ディケンズが料理人として過ごした体験を書いた本にも「料理人は結婚していようがしていまいが、MRSを付けて呼ばれる」と書いてあった。
Mrs Lewis lived a life apart, suspended as it were permanently in space between the upper and lower regions in a bedroom and sitting-room of her own. She even had her meals carried there on a tray by Nellie, the under-housemaid, and only descended to the kitchen to order the meals and quiz into the larders and store cupboards.

ただ、「日の名残り」ではmiss と呼ばれているので、その辺は？
他のメイド達が名前（given name)の方でメアリー、とかエマとか呼ばれるのに対して、ミス・ケントンとか名字(family name)に肩書きが付け加えて呼ばれる訳だから、大きな違いがある。ちなみにこの引用にも出てくるように、Lady's maid（女主人の身の回りの世話をするメイド）はmiss Biggsとかいうように、敬称をつけて呼ばれる。
ちなみに「ゴスフォード・パーク」 の中で、トレンサム伯爵夫人のLady's maidの Mary Maceachranは、本当なら夫人から名字で呼ばれるべきだが彼女のアイリッシュ系の名前が発音が難しいので、メアリーと呼ばれていると言っている。
Well, she should call me Maceachran, now I'm a lady's maid, that's what my mother says. But Her Ladyship can't pronounce it, so she calls me Mary.
不思議なのは、「日の名残り」や「ゴスフォード・パーク」 の中で執事は使用人仲間からはMrを付けて呼ばれるが、主人からは名字を呼び捨てにされている。それに対して「ゴスフォード・パーク」 で女中頭は使用人仲間からはもちろん女主人からも、mrsを付けて呼ばれていることだ。
年齢が高いからだろうか？
